Abstract
The Barak Valley forms the Southern part of the state of Assam in India’s North-Eastern Region of India surrounded by hills on the three sides and has a riverine in international border with Bangladesh on the other side. Before independence and partition of India, it was a part of the larger Surma Valley. The tea industry had attained almost phenomenal prosperity during colonial period. In the colonial Barak Valley with the gradual development of communication, both external and internal trade grew up and the volume of trade began to expand. Communication system in the Barak Valley was not well developed though all the forms of communication were in use. The economic condition of Valley before the advent of the British was very gloomy. The colonial rule though initiated the opening of both domestic and foreign trade, but there was no much improvement in trade.
