Abstract
Northeast India being a bio-diversity rich region possesses different ecological peculiarities which gave rise to a large number of plant resources being incorporated in the diet of inhabitants of the region. Assam also has rich legend in utilization of different non-conventional plants in culinary. In the present study a total number of 57 plants with 64 uses have been recorded from different markets of the three districts of Barak Valley, Southern Assam. It was seen that leaves, stems, roots, fruits and flowers were sold in the markets all year round together with the conventional vegetables. Most of the sellers were direct sellers and many of them were women. Investment requirement was very low in this business because the sellers collected the vegetables directly from wild or non-agrarian areas. Non-dependence on conventional system of cultivation made these vegetables and fruits, huge untapped resources which if explored sustainably can lead to an economic up-liftment to the communities involved and can open up ways for better livelihood.
