Indian Medicinal Plants with Potential Anti-Fertility Activity

Abstract
According to World Health Organization (WHO) reports, 70%–80% of the world population is confiding in traditional medicine for primary healthcare. In India and across the globe, people are regularly using plants and plant preparations to control both male and female fertility, as is being reported in ancient texts. This trend is continuing due to the ready availability and cost-effectiveness of plant products, and because users are seeking privacy regarding their reproductive health. Furthermore, users are generally finding plant-derived products to be free from side effects. These herbal agents act as "antifertility agents" by inhibiting spermatogenesis or testosterone in males, or by affecting ovulation in females. Researchers are currently studying flavonoids, polyphenols, and terpenoids for their ability to regulate reproductive functions. Consequently, in this review, we are summarizing the available information regarding the impact of certain medicinal plants on reproductive function and their evolving role in fertility regulation.
