Abstract
Modern healthcare places a strong emphasis on rehabilitation, which allows people to recover, adjust, and attain the greatest possible functional independence after suffering from an illness, injury, or chronic condition. The integration of nursing, physiotherapy, and allied health sciences has become necessary for providing complete, effective, and patient-centered treatment as healthcare systems deal with growing complexity brought on by aging populations, the increasing frequency of non-communicable diseases, and longer survival with disability. Because traditional discipline-based models are no longer adequate to meet complex rehabilitation needs, interprofessional collaboration has become a strategic priority for health systems around the world. This chapter explores the integration of nursing, physiotherapy, and related health sciences within current rehabilitation frameworks, emphasizing the ways in which collaborative care models enhance clinical results, patient experiences, and overall system effectiveness. It covers the theoretical underpinnings of interprofessional practice, such as the biopsychosocial model, systems theory, and patient-centered care paradigms, which all highlight coordinated interventions and shared responsibility. The conceptual foundation for interdisciplinary rehabilitation routes that treat the physical, psychological, and social aspects of recovery is provided by these models. Additionally, the chapter discusses how the responsibilities and skill sets of nurses and allied health workers are changing in integrated rehabilitation teams. While physiotherapists and other allied health professionals provide focused functional, cognitive, and psychosocial therapy, nurses serve as clinical anchors, ensuring continuity of care, monitoring patient progress, and coordinating interdisciplinary interventions. Effective collaboration is based on clearly defined roles, mutual respect, and shared decision-making procedures that link rehabilitation objectives with patient priorities. Integrated rehabilitation models have been shown to shorten hospital stays, lower readmission rates, and enhance functional independence and quality of life across a range of healthcare environments. The use of remote therapy, data-driven decision-making, and continuous monitoring is further revolutionizing rehabilitation practice through technological advancements. Digital health tools such wearable sensors, tele-rehabilitation platforms, and electronic care coordination systems facilitate smooth communication between nurses and allied health professionals in various care settings. By encouraging patient participation and self-management, these technologies broaden access to rehabilitation services, especially for rural and underserved communities. Integrated rehabilitation models also tackle ethical, legal, and professional governance issues since they demand shared responsibility, open communication, and accountability across disciplines. Matters pertaining to data privacy, patient consent, professional liability, and equitable access must be addressed via interdisciplinary education and strong governance frameworks. The chapter highlights the significance of interprofessional education, leadership development, and policy support in maintaining a collaborative practice. Lastly, the chapter highlights potential avenues for integrated rehabilitation, such as interprofessional education reform, system-level integration, and care models driven by innovation. Rehabilitation can develop into a comprehensive, effective, and sustainable healthcare service that improves recovery, dignity, and long-term well-being for a wide range of patient groups by fostering greater collaboration between nursing, physiotherapy, and related health sciences.
